FAQs

What is a “Bread Riot” anyway?

During the Civil War, women in Salisbury and towns throughout the South marched on merchants in “bread riots” to demand food for their hungry families. Our organization is named for these courageous women.

When was Bread Riot established?

Starting around 2007, a group of community-minded individuals began meeting in Salisbury to enjoy and discuss local food. In 2011, the group began operating more formally, becoming a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Who runs the organization?

A volunteer-based Board of Directors manages Bread Riot. It includes up to 12 members, with four officer positions. The board holds regular monthly meetings as well as a special annual planning meeting. Contact us if you would like to join.

Do farmers donate the produce?

We pay local farmers for the produce used in our programs. We want to encourage them in all their endeavors and help them grow. Our goal is to keep them in business so they can provide healthy food for our community.

How are your programs funded?

Bread Riot’s summer and winter produce-distribution programs are funded through a combination of local and regional grants, charitable donations and sponsorships. We hold one major fundraising event in the fall.

How can I help out?

Volunteer! We always need individuals who can pick up produce, pack bags and boxes, distribute items at meal sites, or help out at events.
Donate! You can send a check to Bread Riot, P.O. Box 296, Salisbury, NC 28145, or make a donation online.
