Volunteer Opportunities
Farm/Produce Pickups
Meet the farmers and see where our food comes from!
We need volunteers to drive to local farms, pick up fresh produce, and transport it to a specified location for packing or distribution. Most of the farms are a short drive from Salisbury, and produce for the Mobile Vegetable Market is picked up from the Salisbury Farmers Market. We will provide you with pickup details and contact information. You will need a vehicle with enough space to hold a few boxes of produce, and you will need to be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Join our volunteer email list to get updates about volunteering for the programs below.

Produce Distribution
Meet the community members who benefit from Bread Riot programs!
We need volunteers to help hand out fresh produce at distribution sites in Rowan County. Volunteers meet at specific sites, help set up tables with boxes of produce and children’s books, and then assist with distribution and cleanup. You will need transportation to reach the site, and you will need to be able to perform light work outdoors. Join our volunteer email list to get updates about volunteering for the programs below.

FAQs
-
You can volunteer as much or as little as you like! Just sign up for the opportunities that work with your schedule. We do ask that you let the volunteer coordinator know promptly if you’re unable to fulfill your commitment once you’ve signed up.
-
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Younger volunteers will be considered with the accompaniment of a parent.
-
Most of our programs are held outdoors and continue regardless of the weather. Consider an umbrella, raincoat and boots for rainy weather and a hat, sunglasses and lightweight clothing for hot afternoons. The coordinator will notify you if an event has been canceled.
-
With the exception of farm/produce pickups, we always try to schedule at least two volunteers, plus a Bread Riot board member, for our programs to spread out the workload.
-
Most cars and SUVs offer enough cargo space to transport a few boxes of produce. Contact the coordinator with any questions or concerns about what you’ll be picking up. For all volunteer opportunities that require driving, you will need a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance.
