Bread Riot Begins Awarding Grants to Local FFA Programs

The funding is intended to have a direct educational impact on students and aspiring young farmers in Rowan County.

As part of Bread Riot's mission to promote farming in our community, we have begun awarding grants up to $500 to support Future Farmers of America projects in local schools. Recently, our board member Teri Davies visited one of the two Rowan County schools selected to receive a grant from Bread Riot in 2024. Corriher-Lipe Middle School in Landis plans to use the Bread Riot grant to supplement a larger grant they received to build a 30' x 42' commercial greenhouse. The Bread Riot grant will partially fund a shade cloth to cover the greenhouse during spring and summer months.

The greenhouse will provide hands-on learning experiences for CLMS students, offering them the opportunity to raise annual and perennial plants for fundraisers and vegetable crops to support a farm-to-table operation. Construction of the greenhouse is expected to be completed in October 2024. Students enrolled in the Exploring Agriculture Classes hope to be in full swing by the middle of the Fall 2024 semester.

We are delighted to connect with schools in this way and hope to offer more financial support in the future!
