Bread Riot Awards Three Small Farmer Grants

The grants are designated to help Rowan County farmers and food producers pursue growth opportunities.

The Bread Riot is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Small Farmer Grants: Big Dog Flowers, Just About the Bread and Liberty Farm. Board members presented each recipient with $500 at the Salisbury Farmer’s Market on July 16, 2022. The grants are distributed with help from the Robertson Foundation to allow small farmers and food producers to pursue growth opportunities.

Big Dog Flowers is a flower farm in China Grove that sells seasonal cut flower bouquets and flower subscriptions. Founder Sally Mabry plans to use the funding to develop a class on how to force tulip bulbs in winter.

Just About the Bread, based in Salisbury, is a bakery specializing in zucchini bread made with organic ingredients. Co-CEOs Hazjel and Kimberly Cortlandt would like to use the funding to expand their product range and grow their business.

Liberty Farm of Cleveland makes goats’ milk soaps, lotions and lip butters as well as goats’ milk cheeses. Owner Madison Johnson hopes to purchase a commercial-grade mixer to increase batch production.
