Crow and Weasel by Barry Lopez

Take a spiritual journey with two heroes on a quest for knowledge and wisdom in this fable of self-discovery.

The Sustainability Book Club met on May 2 to discuss Crow and Weasel by Barry Lopez. This mythical tale was originally published in 1990, and although it is considered a middle-grade book, it is a wonderful read for all ages. Alongside the text are beautiful illustrations by Tom Pohrt, who brings Lopez’s animal characters to life.

In the book, Crow and Weasel leave their families behind to take an adventurous voyage north into lands unknown to their tribe. They face many trials along the way and encounter various people who teach them about the land and help them continue their journey. This is a brilliant coming of age story that offers lessons about friendship, cooperation, conquering your fears, respecting other people, giving thanks, sharing wisdom with others, and more. The story is inspired by traditions of the North American Plains people and the vision quests often undertaken by young people.

During the book club meeting, members remarked on the fabulous illustrations and the many moral lessons in the book. Although Lopez said the characters’ journey wasn’t based on real locations, members talked about the geographic areas that fit different parts of the story. The animals Lopez chose were also a point of discussion, with crows traditionally symbolizing mischief and weasels seen as tricksters. Members enjoyed the book so much that there may be another book by this author on the list soon.
