2024–2025 School Harvest Bags Deliver Local Food to Students
This valuable winter program will finish up its third year this month!
Bread Riot’s School Harvest Bags program will soon complete its third year of helping to address food insecurity in Rowan County! Started in 2022, the program delivers fresh produce and other foods to students and their families at Koontz Elementary School, North Rowan Middle School and Hanford Dole Elementary School during the winter months.
On select weeks from mid-November through April, Bread Riot volunteers pick up vegetables, eggs and bread that Bread Riot purchases from local farmers and producers, and the volunteers sort and pack the items into reusable bags or boxes. Once the food is delivered to the three schools, counselors and other staff distribute it to 30+ students and their families.
The School Harvest Bags program fulfills Bread Riot’s mission to increase access to locally produced foods and to support local farmers, especially during the winter! Thank you to the generous organizations and individuals who provide the funding for this program, our hardworking local food producers, and our dedicated Bread Riot volunteers. We couldn’t do it without YOU!
