Bread Riot Awards Next Step Grants to Two Local Farmers

The grants are designated to help Rowan County farmers expand their operations in a meaningful way.

Bread Riot board members presented the grants to Jason Chester of Farmer’s Daughter Organics and Jill and Tim Downing of Downing Farms.

The Bread Riot is pleased to announce the Next Step grant recipients for 2022 are Farmer’s Daughter Organics and Downing Farms. Both were presented with the funding at the Salisbury Farmer's Market on May 7, 2022.

Jason and Brittany Chester of Farmer's Daughter Organics in Mt. Ulla plan to use their grant to purchase two high tunnels to expand their ability to grow vegetables during the winter months.

Jill and Tim Downing of Downing Farms in Salisbury plan to use their grant to expand their greenhouse and develop an aquaponic system to produce fresh vegetables and fish.

Bread Riot regularly purchases fresh vegetables from both farms for distribution to local families and to the Winter Harvest CSA subscribers.

Next Step grants are intended to help grow small farms and increase the variety of farm produce and products available in Rowan County. Projects might support sustainable farming practices or organic/chemical-free farming, developing a niche or specialty market, growing winter produce, selling at the Salisbury Farmer's Market or to the public in another way, or continuing education toward a specific farming-related goal.
