A Call to Farms by Jennifer Grayson

New agrarians are finding hope and purpose in reconnecting to the land and striving to improve the future of American food.

The Sustainability Book Club met on November 7 to discuss A Call to Farms: Reconnecting to Nature, Food, and Community in a Modern World. In this book, award-winning journalist Jennifer Grayson profiles a variety of contemporary farmers, graziers, and food activists who are working toward a more sustainable food system. The author visits with each of them and tells their personal stories, including the many challenges they face in pursuing regenerative agricultural practices. During the book club meeting, members talked about these challenges, from insufficient income to soil degradation to the high cost of land. Book club members agreed—farming is not easy, and most small farmers face similar challenges. Hopefully these sustainable farmers and new ones will continue to work toward improving the land and our food.
