Fifteen Hurricanes That Changed the Carolinas by Jay Barnes

This engaging book tells the true stories of the hurricanes that had the greatest impact on North Carolina and South Carolina, from the eighteenth century to 2023.

The Sustainability Book Club met on October 3 to discuss Fifteen Hurricanes That Changed the Carolinas by Jay Barnes. In the book, the author recounts the rich hurricane history of the Carolinas, including details about devastating storms in the 1700s when forecasting was nonexistent. With the warming planet, Barnes urges readers to consider the storms to come and profiles how rising temperatures and rising sea levels will affect future Carolina hurricanes.

The group was in the process of reading this book when Hurricane Helene arrived in North Carolina and caused so much destruction. During the book club meeting, members discussed how this hurricane would surely be included in future editions of this book. Members also shared stories about those affected by this hurricane and memories of past storms.
